Australian climbs under truck - discovered after 400 kilometers

Bar night over, hurry home: an Australian has the glorious idea of hanging on to the frame of a truck and jumping off at the next traffic light. But an unexpected green wave makes the journey take much longer.

Climbing under the chassis of a truck after an evening of drinking to get home as quickly as possible turned out not to be such a good idea for an Australian. After driving for around five hours without a break, the 43-year-old was only able to climb out from under the truck about 400 kilometers from his home.

As can be seen on avideo recording by Queenslandpolice published by theGuardian, an officer found the adventurer against his will on a road in the state of Queensland last week. The 43-year-old was completely disheveled and disoriented after the long drive. "You were on a big bender, you completely lost control and ended up here and are now trying to get back?" the officer asks the man in the video. "Something like that," he replies.

According to police, the 43-year-old had drunkenly clung to the undercarriage of a truck in the seaside resort of Nambucca Heads in the state of New South Wales with the plan to get back down at a red light in Coffs Harbour, about 40 minutes away. The plan went awry, thanks to a green wave the truck made it through Coffs Harbour without stopping - and only stopped five hours later in the state of Queensland to refuel.

"It was just stupidity"

"I'm really exhausted," the 43-year-old told the police officer. "I've had a bit to drink." The amused officer replied that he had certainly had a bumpy and uncomfortable ride. "I didn't have to worry about the air conditioning, there was a good breeze," the man replied ironically and then conceded: "To be honest with you: it was just stupidity."

The breakneck drive and being stranded hundreds of kilometers from his home were not the only price the 43-year-old had to pay. Queensland police fined him 288 Australian dollars (173 euros) for driving in a "part of a motorized vehicle not intended for passengers or goods".

The Australian's unconventional mode of transportation attracted international attention, with news outlets worldwide reporting his strange incident. Due to his actions, he faced not only physical exhaustion but also substantial alcohol-related penalties in Australia.
