Nevada - At least three dead after shooting at university in Las Vegas - suspected shooter among the victims
At least three people are dead after a gun attack at a university in the US state of Nevada. A fourth victim was seriously injured and taken to hospital, as the Las Vegas police announced on Wednesday on the short message service X, formerly Twitter. The attacker is dead. "There is no longer any danger to the public," said Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill.
The shooting took place on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, on Wednesday afternoon (local time). Students were told to get to safety and the police arrived with a large contingent. A short time later, the police announced that the suspected attacker had been found and was dead. How the shooter died was initially unclear, as was his motive. Investigators did not initially give any details about the victims or the course of the attack.
Shootings and rampages are part of everyday life in the US
One woman told local radio station KVVU that she heard several loud noises and fled into a building on the campus. "I ran into the basement and we were in the basement for 20 minutes." She was later evacuated by the police.
In the USA, rampages and fatal shootings are sadly part of everyday life. Firearms are readily available there and in circulation on a massive scale. Deadly attacks with many victims regularly shake the country - for example at schools, supermarkets, nightclubs or large events.
According to the specialist website Gun Violence Archive, there have already been 600 attacks across the country this year in which four or more people have been injured or killed by firearms. Calls for stricter gun laws regularly come to nothing.
The gambling metropolis of Las Vegas in the west of the USA was the scene of the deadliest gun attack in US history in 2017. Back then, 58 people were shot dead at a music festival, and two more people died as a result of their injuries in the years that followed.

The attacker, believed to be one of the victims, carried out the firearm attack at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. This incident serves as another tragic reminder of the prevalence of gun violence in the USA, a country where such attacks are unfortunately all too common, particularly in places like schools, supermarkets, nightclubs, and large events.
