State elections - Apologies for CDU campaign kick-off in Saxony and Thuringia
With the support of Federal Chairman Friedrich Merz, the CDU Landesverbaende of Saxony and Thuringia will start their election campaign together today. Merz is expected to give a speech in the evening at an event in Meerane in the border region of both federal states, as the party announced beforehand. Saxon Minister-President Michael Kretschmer and Thuringian Landesvorsitzend Mario Voigt are also expected to attend.
On September 1st, elections will take place in both states. In Saxony, the CDU has been in government continuously since 1990, with Kretschmer at the helm since 2017, who wants to defend his office again. The party was last at 29% in an Infratest survey, just behind the AfD (30%).
In the neighboring Thuringia, the Union wants to bring about a political change with Voigt as the leading candidate and regain the position of Minister-President after almost ten years of opposition. However, the AfD was also at 29% in an Insa survey from the end of June, while the CDU came in second place with 22%, just ahead of the FDP (20%). In Thuringia, Minister-President Bodo Ramelow (Left) currently governs in a minority government with the SPD and Greens.
- The joint election campaign kickoff for the CDU in Saxony and Thuringia is a significant event, with Federal Chairperson Friedrich Merz playing a prominent role.
- Merz's speech at the event in Meerane marks the beginning of a crucial period in the State election campaign for the CDU in both states.
- Saxony's State elections on September 1st will see Michael Kretschmer defending his office as Minister-President, having been in power since 2017.
- Despite the CDU's lead in Saxony, with 29% in the latest Infratest survey, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) is closing the gap, currently at 30%.
- In Thuringia's State elections, the CDU, under the leadership of Mario Voigt, aims to overthrow the current minority government led by Bodo Ramelow (Left) and reclaim the Minister-President position.
- Despite the CDU's second place in Thuringia, at 22% in the latest Insa survey, the AfD is also strong, having secured 29% in the same survey.
- The joint campaign could provide a significant boost for the CDU in both states, as they look to win over voters and secure electoral victories in the upcoming State elections.
