"We have been eagerly awaiting the birth for 15 months," said Emma Evison from the zoo, according to the press release. "It's quite unusual for a rhino to give birth in daylight, so we weren't expecting it to happen right in front of us."
According to the zoo, the eastern black rhino is one of the most endangered species in the world. Today, there are fewer than 600 animals left in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. "Unfortunately, it is a species that has been hunted and poached for more than a century for its horn, which is sold illegally at wildlife markets," explained Evison.
The birth of the rhino cub is a testament to the zoo's efforts to protect endangered animals, specifically the eastern black rhinoceros, which faces severe threats from hunting and poaching. The newborn and its mother, Zuri, are thriving in their environment at the Chester zoo.
