Due to global disruptions caused by a faulty software update of the IT security system of the manufacturer Crowdstrike, all IT services of the hospital were affected, the UKSH announced.

Therefore, all scheduled surgeries at the hospital locations were cancelled and the Ambulances were closed on Friday. A total of 137 surgeries were cancelled, according to the University Hospital. Affected patients were informed and individual make-up appointments were arranged.

Approximately 9000 computers were affected

As the University Hospital reported, measures to restore normal operation were initiated on Friday morning. This includes contacting the manufacturer Crowdstrike. The responsible client was uninstalled and defective system data was corrected on all affected computers. A total of approximately 9000 computers at the UKSH were affected.

"Thanks to the engaged actions of our employees in the various clinical areas such as the Ambulances, Intensive Care Units, Emergency Rooms, Wards, Pharmacy, Financial Management, Facility Management, and Service Stern Nord, patient safety was constantly ensured," said the CEO of the UKSH, Jens Scholz.

The error was identified and in particular the Emergency Rooms, Operating Rooms, Intensive Care Units, Laboratories, the processing unit for medical devices, Delivery Rooms, Radiology, the Catheter Labs, and the Pharmacy were already back in operation on Friday.
