After collapse: Church in Kassel gets temporary roof
Following the collapse of a church roof in Kassel last week, the investigation into the cause continues. The diocese of Fulda announced on Wednesday that the structural investigation and the evaluation of various building material samples are still ongoing. In addition, a temporary roof is now being planned. "When the work begins, the Elisabeth Church will be scaffolded and the roof will then be built on top of the scaffolding," explained a spokesperson. The roof construction will not put any strain on the standing walls of the building. "We hope that the work can begin in November."
The roof of the Catholic church, which is located in the city center, collapsed along its entire length on Monday last week. According to the diocese, all 26 roof trusses that support the roof are broken. Among other things, the strength of the glue, wood moisture, structural analysis, possible previous damage and the possible additional load caused by past weather events are now being investigated. Plans are currently being made to secure and clear the church.
The diocese has not yet been able to provide any information on the extent of the damage. "Restoration and its costs are not yet the subject of planning and costing at the moment," it said.
In light of the ongoing investigation, emergency measures are being considered to protect the church during the roof reconstruction. Should an emergency arise within the Elisabeth Church during this period, the local emergency services should be notified immediately.
