Schools - ADAC: Parents should accompany children to school route

The ADAC in Saxony recommends parents of first-graders to choose a safe way to school for their children and train them on it. "Only through practice and under the guidance of adults who behave exemplarily, do children learn how to be safe on the road", the ADAC stated. On the way, children should be warned of potential hazards without scaring them.

"If the children show some level of safety awareness, escorts can gradually move back and monitor from a distance", it was stated. In the first days, first-graders will have to process many new impressions. The school route is one of them, as the accident risk around primary schools is high during this period.

ADAC: Safety comes before speed

In Saxony, the new school year begins on August 5. For approximately 40,500 girls and boys, it marks the beginning of a new chapter as first-graders. According to an ADAC study from 2023, the shortest school route is most commonly chosen in Saxony - by 57% of those surveyed. However, the safest school route should be given priority, advised the ADAC.

64% of girls and boys in the Free State go to school on foot - a nationwide top value. Parents in Saxony are most concerned about the danger posed by other road users due to inattention or speeding. The ADAC therefore appealed to drivers of motor vehicles to exercise caution and consideration.

  1. To ensure their safety, parents in Saxony are encouraged by the ADAC to select the safest school path for their first-graders.
  2. On this school path, the ADAC recommends warning children about potential hazards without causing fear, emphasizing the importance of practical training and adult guidance.
  3. Given that first-graders are processing numerous new impressions, the ADAC suggests that escorts should initially remain close and later gradually move back while maintaining a watchful distance.
  4. In light of high accident risks around primary schools, particularly during the initial period, the ADAC advises motorists in Saxony to exercise caution and consideration on their commutes.
