The 40-year-old man is suspected to have stolen the vehicle on late Thursday evening in Wuppertal, as the driver had just stepped out to attend to his work, according to a police spokesperson.
The 34-year-old worker had reportedly parked the van at Berliner Platz to exchange the batteries of E-Rollers. In the meantime, the transit van was stolen. Approximately an hour later, the accident occurred in Radevormwald (Oberbergischer Kreis), where the suspected thief was seriously injured. An ambulance took him to the hospital.
The police identified the stolen transit van as the one involved in the accident based on several findings, including headphones found in the vehicle that were identified by the 34-year-old.
The incident of criminality in North Rhine-Westphalia's Bergish Land region has raised concerns about increasing cases of vehicle theft. Despite the steep fines and penalties, incidents of stolen vehicles like transporters and vans continue to happen in urban areas such as Wuppertal. The accident in Radevormwald serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of such criminal acts, both for the thieves and the innocent bystanders. Traffic in the area was disrupted due to the collision, adding to the already heavy traffic congestion in this part of Germany.
