Water corpse identified - A person from Süderoogsand is missing, he is from Hamburg.
At a body discovered on Süderoogsand a week ago, the deceased is a missing person from Hamburg, as the police reported.
The man was reported missing on 29th April. His inflatable dinghy was then found drifting in the area of the Elbe estuary.
The water corpse was discovered by employees of the Wattenmeer Protection Station on 9th July on Süderoogsand in the Schleswig-Holstein Wattenmeer. The deceased was wearing a black neoprene wetsuit. The investigations into the circumstances of death are ongoing.
According to the Wattenmeer Protection Station, Süderoogsand is one of the largest sandbanks in Europe. The volunteers of the nature conservation organisation visit the sand regularly for bird counts. This is a protected area and can only be entered with special permits.
The emergency services were alerted due to the discovery of the black neoprene wetsuit on Süderoogsand, which led to the identification of the missing person. Their body was found in the same area a month later, on August 9, in the North Sea. The police in Schleswig-Holstein are working closely with authorities in Hamburg to determine the exact cause of death, given the circumstances of the incident during the spring season.
