Mishaps at sea - A day with the lifeguards
The German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked (DGzRS) provides a glimpse into their work on Sunday. This year, 19 stations in the North Sea and 31 stations in the Baltic Sea are participating. The crews present their rescue technology and demonstrate how they save people at sea, according to the organizers.
Visitors can already explore Seenotrettungskreuzers at stations Großenburg, Juist, Laboe, Norderney, Neuharlingersiel, Ueckermünde, Vitte/Hiddensee, and Wustrow on Saturday. At the Vitte/Hiddensee station, Seenotretter will conduct an exercise. The station Travemünde celebrates the Day of the Seenotretter exceptionally on August 31 with exercises and the presentation of Seenotrettungskreuzers and -boots.
Exercise with Helicopter
The main program is traditionally on the last Sunday in July. Guests can follow rescue exercises in the harbors and along the coast on that day - for example, at stations Borkum, Breege, Büsum, Fehmarn, Kühlungsborn, List, Norddeich, Sassnitz, Schleswig, and Timmendorf/Poel.
At stations Großenburg, Laboe, Langballigau, Langeoog, Maasholm, and Wilhelmshaven, a helicopter exercise is also planned. In addition, interested parties can talk to the crews and visit the Seenotrettungskreuzers and -boots.
Since its founding in 1865, the DGzRS has reportedly rescued or freed over 86,000 people from danger - voluntarily, independently, and financed by donations. New sponsors and supporters can sail out to sea with the crew on the Day of the Seenotretter in Borkum, Bremerhaven, Cuxhaven, Eckernförde, Großenburg, Kühlungsborn, Laboe, and Wilhelmshaven.
