Alpine crossing - A 70-year-old person tragically passed away in the Alps
A 70-year-old mountaineer from Rhineland-Palatinate has tragically fallen in the Alps of the Ammergau region. He fell around noon today on a mountain trail to the south of the Klammspitze peak, according to the Murnau am Staffelsee Border Police Inspection. The fall occurred over approximately 100 meters of steep, rocky grassland, resulting in fatal injuries. There is currently no evidence of external involvement.
The man was hiking with two other mountaineers from Rhinland-Palatinate on a multi-day trek through the Ammergau Alps. The group was well-equipped and considered experienced, as the police reported. One of the 70-year-old man's companions placed an emergency call immediately after the fall. However, the ADAC rescue helicopter crew and two teams from the Oberammergau Mountain Rescue could only confirm the mountaineer's death upon arrival.
The Ammergau Alps mountain range, which primarily belongs to Bavaria but also extends into Tyrolean territory, covers approximately 30 square kilometers and includes almost 200 peaks.
