Science Minister - 500 new student housing at Saar-Uni

At the University campus in Saarbrücken, around 500 new student housing units are planned to be built by the year 2028. According to Saarland Science Minister Jakob von Weizsäcker (SPD), there are currently 70 places. This means a sevenfold increase in the offering: "A crazy dynamics that we have in terms of housing," said the Minister.

The first 234 places are scheduled to be completed in 2026, the second construction phase will follow two years later. The number of floors will determine the additional 249 to 311 places it will offer. "Here, something significant will really be created in a manageable timeframe, which will have a positive impact on the student experience, as well as the overall campus experience," said von Weizsäcker.

Student housing on the University campus are not only practical because the routes are shorter and one saves a lot of time, but also cheaper than other shared apartments. This could also contribute to the fact that students might not have to work as many side jobs, but could focus more on their studies instead. Additionally, it is easier to form study groups or engage in sports with people from the same study program in the dormitory.

The construction project also has a "atmospheric" significance: With a view to shopping opportunities and restaurants, a new residential quarter is being created here, which is not only important for urban development, but also for the campus development. Von Weizsäcker: "The living quality should significantly improve."
