34-year-old convicted of manslaughter by partner

It is the end of a toxic relationship: after an argument, a 34-year-old woman drags her partner for miles on the hood of her car in Baden-Württemberg. In the end, the man falls under the car and dies. The woman now has to spend a long time in prison.

In the trial for a fatal car accident in Baden-Württemberg, the 34-year-old defendant has been sentenced to six years in prison. This is the conclusion of an event that was caused by "many unfortunate moments", said the judge at the sentencing at Stuttgart District Court. The public prosecutor's office had previously demanded seven years in prison, the defense three and a half years in prison for what they saw as a less serious case of manslaughter.

In connection with the crime, Hollywood-like scenes took place in Reichenbach an der Fils, south-east of Stuttgart, at the end of May: The 34-year-old woman had driven off in her car in fear after an argument - with her partner on the hood. Whether he jumped onto the car himself remained unclear until the end. The woman drove almost two kilometers with him through the town. The 32-year-old finally fell under the car on the country road and died from his serious injuries.

Although she had not intended for her partner to die, she did not care at that moment, the judge concluded. The defendant had a fear reaction, but not a "headless panic reaction". She would have had "x alternatives for action" on the long drive, during which her partner had called for help on the hood. However, the defendant had not braked and had instead driven up to 70 kilometers per hour in some cases, thereby accepting the death of her partner. The woman did not use the vehicle as a vehicle, but "perverted it as a tool" - and did not even have a driving license.

The accused and her partner had been in a toxic relationship from which neither of them had been able to free themselves, the judge said. The 34-year-old had admitted to the crime and apologized to the victim's relatives during the trial. "You have to be able to deal with death," said the judge. "We will never be able to take that away from them." The defendant said that she would accept the verdict and waive her right to appeal - as did the other parties involved in the proceedings.
