15-year-old Frenchman kills his parents

A house is on fire in a village of 800 inhabitants in the east of France. During their operation, the fire department discovers two bodies - they have gunshot wounds. A few days later, the 15-year-old son is arrested 600 kilometers to the south in Montpellier. The village is horrified.

After two bodies were found in a burnt-down house in France, the 15-year-old son of the alleged victims confessed to killing his parents. The teenager admitted to the gendarmerie that he had "killed his parents", according to Eric Vaillant, the Grenoble public prosecutor.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the teenager, who was born in 2008, had disappeared after the fire at his parents' house. He was arrested on Saturday morning in Montpellier in the south of the country. The family home in Châteauvillain, a town of 800 inhabitants around 60 kilometers from Lyon, burned down last Monday night. Two bodies were found in the rubble, both of which had gunshot wounds.

A search had been underway for the 15-year-old son ever since. The identification of the two bodies is still ongoing, but according to the public prosecutor's office, they are "presumably" the two parents. A brother, who is two years older, had left the house on the evening before the drama to go to his place of study. The vehicle in which the 58-year-old father usually drove to work, a Citroën Picasso, was found abandoned in the Drôme department in south-eastern France.

The arrested 15-year-old has been in custody since Saturday. He is being investigated for murder and arson. The police have not yet commented on a possible motive.

The incident and the 15-year-old's confession caused horror in Châteauvillain. Daniel Gaude, mayor of the municipality for 22 years, said he was "stunned". "Nothing pointed to something like this," said Gaude.
