Public Toilets - 107 free Klos for all

The free and gender-neutral use of public toilets in Berlin is set to be expanded. After a two-year test phase, Berlin's government and the operating company Wall announced that the free usage would be extended to 107 facilities. These are known as Berlin Toilets: fully automatic WC units with integrated urinals, barrier-free, and self-cleaning.

According to the announcement, Wall operates a total of 278 Berlin Toilets in the city. The conversion to free toilets is expected to happen as soon as possible.

For the remaining 171 toilets, the usage fee of 50 cents still applies, which cannot be paid in coins since 2022. The land and the company plan to extend contactless payment options to increase the comfort and usage numbers of the facilities. Currently, one can pay with Debit and Credit cards as well as via NFC-interfaces on their smartphones.

Regarding vandalism, all Berlin Toilet facilities are planned to be redesigned in the coming months.

Toilet concept and locations

During the testing phase, society's response to the free usage of Berlin Toilets was largely positive. Maintaining high hygiene standards is crucial in all toilet facilities, regardless of whether they are free or not.
