Festival in Osthessen (East Hesse) - 10,000 Hippie-fans expect in Breitenbach
A Hippie Market, Yoga Courses and a Lot of Love: The largest Hippie-Festival in Europe, according to its own claims, starts in the eastern Hessian Breitenbach am Herzberg from Thursday (25.07.) to Sunday (28.07.). The "Herzberg-Festival" opens its gates on the festival grounds at Burg Herzberg, as the organizers announced beforehand. Since the weather has been unpredictable in recent years and the safety of the guests is a top priority, tickets were limited to 10,000 this year.
According to Festival Organizer Gunther Lorz, the Hippie-Festival is being restructured this year to appeal to younger generations. "Love and Peace is also possible with new music," Lorz said. Over four days, the Festival offers performances on the meadow at the foot of Herzberg Castle in the areas of Rock, Folk, Blues and Reggae. Among the bands performing are "Wolfmother", "Xavier Rudd", and the former Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason with his band "Saucerful of Secrets Songs".
This is the first edition of the Festival since the legalization of Cannabis. In response to a question about the handling of the drug at the event, the organizer only replied: "Because there are many children on site, no one just throws a joint on the ground. People also respect it with their joints." Children and adolescents up to and including 14 years old have free entry to the Festival.
The Hippie-Festival is one of the oldest of its kind in Germany. The music festival was first celebrated in 1968 and is therefore a year older than the legendary Woodstock-Festival of 1969, which is considered the musical peak of the US Hippie movement.
