Zelensky promotes continued military aid for Ukraine during visit to Oslo
Zelensky arrived in the Norwegian capital in the morning for an unannounced visit. Upon Selensky's arrival, Gahr Störe said that his country "continues to support Ukraine 's fight for its defense".
Following a subsequent meeting with Norway's King Harald V, the Ukrainian head of state was also due to take part in a meeting of the heads of government of the five Nordic countries. Zelensky hopes that the Nordic countries will support Ukrainian weapons production at the meeting.
In an article published in the Financial Times on Wednesday, the heads of government of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden stated that Ukraine could not defend itself against Russia "with words alone". "The war will not be won without weapons." Now is "not the time to let up".
Alongside the USA and Germany, the five Nordic states have been among Ukraine's most important supporters since the start of the Russian war of aggression in February 2022. At the beginning of the year, Norway promised Kiev aid worth 6.8 billion euros until 2027. On Wednesday, the Norwegian government announced that it would provide a good 250 million euros as part of this aid package and deliver urgently needed new air defense weapons to Ukraine.
Norway and Denmark have so far provided Kiev with tanks, cannons and ammunition, among other things. Both countries also assured Ukraine that they would provide its army with F-16 fighter jets. Sweden, for its part, announced further military aid in the form of military equipment worth around 190 million euros. According to Stockholm, it is also considering deploying Gripen fighter jets.
Prior to his visit to Norway, Selensky had traveled to Argentina and the USA. Following talks in Washington, he had expressed cautious optimism about further US military aid in the fight against the Russian invasion forces. "I received the signals, they were more than positive," said Selenskyj on Tuesday. Biden had already asked Congress in October for new aid for Kiev amounting to around 61 billion dollars. However, Congress has not yet approved the financial aid.
A default by the USA would have serious consequences for Kiev. The allies of the USA and Ukraine are therefore looking to Washington with concern.
