Youth Parliament: Debates on education and clan crime
For three days, the state parliament in North Rhine-Westphalia was in the hands of the younger generation. At the 13th Youth State Parliament, 191 young people took the seats of MPs from the CDU, Greens, SPD, FDP and AfD. Their topics this year included debates on political education and clan crime, as the state parliament reported on Saturday. Among other things, a motion was passed to make apprenticeships more attractive and counteract the shortage of skilled workers in NRW.
The participants had spent two days working intensively on preparing for their plenary session, which was then held in three hours on Saturday. The resolutions passed are to be passed on to the main committee of the state parliament.
This year's President of the Youth Parliament was Julia Wimmelmeier, a 20-year-old real estate student from Rietberg in East Westphalia. She hoped that the politicians would discuss the resolutions of the Youth Parliament with appropriate seriousness, she had hoped at the start. During the three days, the young people got to know everyday political life and parliamentary work.
Since 2008, around 2,500 young people have taken part in the NRW Youth State Parliament. The topics often included digitalization, school policy and local public transport.
The Youth Parliament President, Julia Wimmelmeier, expressed her hope that political leaders would give due consideration to the resolutions passed by the youth parliamentarians. To counteract the skilled worker shortage in NRW, a motion was passed during the Youth Parliament to make apprenticeships more appealing to the youth.
