Youth hostels can return to pre-pandemic levels

Youth hostels in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg were able to return to pre-coronavirus overnight stays in 2023. The hostels have left the pandemic and its effects behind them, explained Katharina Pauly from the German Youth Hostel Association. In her view, it is good news for child and youth welfare that community experiences are possible again.

However, according to Pauly, the exact number of overnight stays this year will only be available in the annual report at the end of February 2024. However, things are currently quieter again in the youth hostels in Schleswig-Holstein: the peak season for school trips has been over since the end of October and only a few families are staying in the hostels at weekends.

Operations in the youth hostels are currently being maintained as usual. Even with rising coronavirus numbers, the hostels are now practiced in dealing with the infection situation - hygiene measures continue to be carefully implemented, Pauly continued.

The outlook for the coming year is also positive - the pre-booking situation is good. According to Pauly, many school trips and group tours have already been booked. However, this is normal, as school classes and groups have to plan ahead.

Tourism in youth hostels is expected to thrive during leisure time, with many school trips and group tours already booked for the upcoming year. Furthermore, education about proper hygiene measures is still a key part of the hostel's operations to ensure a safe leisure experience for all visitors.
