- Young People Discussing the Tempelhof Field
The discussion about the future of Tempelhofer Field and a possible perimeter development also involves children and young people. Almost 200 people aged 6 to 19 participated in workshops held in July as part of a process called the Dialogue Process, the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing announced. The aim was to give them the opportunity to express their views and wishes at an early stage.
Among other things, there were photo excursions and the chance to design a wish tree, build with Lego or paint. According to the Senate Department, eleven workshops were offered with 198 children and young people from 15 schools and leisure facilities from six Berlin districts, from Steglitz-Zehlendorf to Neukölln.
The results of the children and youth participation will be published on the project website at https://thf-dialog.berlin.de/.
In addition to the so-called Dialogue Workshop for discussing the future use, an International Ideas Competition is planned, which will incorporate the discussion results. The first phase of the competition is scheduled to begin in mid-November and is expected to be completed by the first half of 2025.
After that, the Senate will decide what to do with Tempelhofer Field. However, construction is legally prohibited following a successful referendum in 2014. Despite this, the black-red coalition is considering changing this at least at the edges of the area due to the housing shortage in Berlin. Before a final political decision is made, the mood in the city will be surveyed again - how this will happen is still unclear.
The children and young people shared their views on the potential Housing developments around Tempelhofer Field during the Dialogue Process workshops. The perimeter development, if approved, may require addressing the city's current Housing shortage.
