Labor market - Young generation: more high school graduates - fewer self-employed

A-levels are more common among younger people in Bavaria than older people - but the proportion of self-employed people is higher among the latter. Last year, 36 percent of the population with a general school-leaving qualification had a Volksschule, Hauptschule or Mittelschule qualification, as the State Statistical Office in Fürth announced on Tuesday, citing data from the 2022 microcensus.

Likewise, 36 percent had a higher education entrance qualification. 27 percent had a secondary school certificate or an equivalent qualification. According to the 2022 data, four percent of the population over the age of 15 did not have a general school-leaving qualification. Three percent were still in school.

In terms of school education, the statistics show clear differences between the age groups. "For example, 52% of today's 25 to 35-year-olds left school with a higher education entrance qualification, whereas this proportion is 20% for older people aged 65 and over. In this age group, the elementary school leaving certificate (today: secondary school leaving certificate) is the most common general school leaving certificate at 57 percent," explained the statisticians.

In terms of vocational qualifications, 25 to 35-year-olds are also significantly more likely to have an academic degree (40 percent) than people over 65 (19 percent). Overall, 58% of Bavarians have completed an apprenticeship or vocational training. However, the proportion has fallen significantly over time. While it is still 68 percent among the over-65s, it is 44 percent among 25 to 35-year-olds.

Once on the labor market, 91 percent of the workforce in Bavaria is employed, while nine percent is self-employed. The proportion of self-employed people rises steadily with increasing age and professional experience.
