After victory against Frankfurt - "You can party well in Saarland": party mood in Saarbrücken
The players of 1. FC Saarbrücken wanted to celebrate the cup coup against Eintracht Frankfurt in style. "I'll definitely treat myself to a few beers today," announced goalscorer Kai Brünker on TV channel Sky. When asked who the party animal in the team was, the 29-year-old striker said: "Actually, it feels like the whole team are party animals - it's a really cool squad."
The 2:0 (0:0) win against the Bundesliga club meant that third-division Saarbrücken reached the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup for the ninth time in the club's history. Brünker (64th minute) and Luca Kerber (78th) scored the winner on Wednesday evening.
"Sensational again today, especially the way the team played," said sporting director Jürgen Luginger: "We can simply win the cup, you have to say that." He gave the professionals a long leash during the celebrations: "We want to enjoy the evening today, it's sensational, the journey continues," said the 55-year-old and announced: "There will be a lot of celebrations now, I think, you can celebrate well in Saarland."
Coach Rüdiger Ziehl, however, limited the time frame somewhat: "We will meet tomorrow afternoon and regenerate." His team continue their 3rd division campaign on Saturday at SC Freiburg II. The Saarland side are eleventh in the table and are not really satisfied with the way the season has gone so far, while in the DFB Cup, after the games against Karlsruhe (2:1) and Bayern Munich (2:1), the next festive act has now followed.
