X encounter significant issues in settling their outstanding penalties.
It seems the Brazilian Supreme Court has delayed the restoration of Platform X's services within the country. According to a notice sent to the platform's legal team on Friday, the hold-up is due to Platform X making the required fines payments to the incorrect banking institution. Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court specified that the payments should be redirected to the appropriate bank account. Furthermore, the Brazilian Attorney General's Office is to address the latest concerns raised by Platform X's Brazilian legal department once the payment issue has been resolved.
Earlier, Platform X, the successor of the US-based Twitter, led by billionaire Elon Musk, submitted a new petition for the reinstatement of its services in Brazil, declaring that all outstanding fines had been paid. On Friday, Platform X settled a fine of 4.8 million euros to resume operations in the substantial Brazilian market. As per insights obtained by news agency Reuters, the platform handed over a fine of 28.6 million reais, which the Supreme Court had imposed. Nevertheless, the document indicates that this is only a fraction of the full fine amount.
The Supreme Court mandated the blocking of Platform X in Brazil at the conclusion of August, citing various legal infringements. Musk interpreted this action as a personal vendetta against him and the responsible judge, Alexandre de Moraes, labeling him a "dictator" and accusing him of censorship. Brazil, a significant democracy in South America, with around 215 million inhabitants, is considered one of the most populous nations globally and nearly as extensive as the EU.
According to the court, Platform X had neglected to effectively tackle the dissemination of hate speech and also transgressed the provision that mandates the designation of a legal representative for the country. The company's efforts to only partially fulfill the court's demands were unsuccessful. Moraes also threatened to seize the frozen assets of Platform X and Musk's satellite company Starlink, as well as imposed substantial fines on private individuals and businesses that may circumvent the block as users.
The Brazilian Attorney General's Office will address the concerns raised by Platform X's Brazilian legal department once the payment issue has been resolved, as specified by Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The Commission, likely referring to the Brazilian regulatory body, will need to review and validate the corrected fines payments made by Platform X before services can be fully restored.
