Energy - WWF also raises objection to Rügen LNG terminal

The environmental foundation WWF has also voiced criticism in the context of the pending approval procedure for the Rügen terminal for liquefied natural gas (LNG). "The performance of the Mukran site is being extrapolated, while at the same time the environmental damage is being underestimated by experts," said Finn Viehberg, Head of the WWF Baltic Sea Office, on Tuesday.

In an objection to the responsible authority, the WWF warns, among other things, of air pollution caused by nitrogen oxides, which would also have an impact on water quality. Viehberg also said that the low-frequency humming of the turbines would cause noise pollution for birds in protected areas, for example.

He reiterated his criticism that no cross-border environmental impact assessment had been carried out together with neighboring countries for the associated connection pipeline, which is not the subject of the ongoing proceedings. "Germany is knowingly breaching its obligations here."

On Monday, Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) had already announced a formal objection as part of the ongoing approval procedure for the stationing and operation of floating LNG terminals in Mukran.
