Wüst urges asylum solution: "Get out of the haggling"

North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) is calling for a nationwide and, if possible, Europe-wide harmonization of asylum seeker benefits. When asylum seekers who have already been rejected in other countries make their way to Germany, this also has to do with the level of benefits, Wüst told the newspaper "Welt am Sonntag". The difference in purchasing power should of course be taken into account when harmonizing benefits.

The CDU politician urged a breakthrough to curb irregular immigration ahead of the federal-state roundtable focusing on migration in Berlin on Monday. "We have to get this done over the winter," he warned.

This includes a permanent, reliable financing agreement that reflects the real costs. "What the federal government has offered so far is - to put it politely - completely unacceptable," criticized Wüst. "The most important thing is that we get out of this haggling." One thing is clear: "If more people come to us, then more money must also flow. We finally need the breathing system promised by the Federal Chancellor." The federal states' demand for a lump sum of 10,000 euros per refugee still applies.

More repatriation agreements with countries of origin are also urgently needed. "We should not hide behind Europe," emphasized Wüst. "This is also a national task." He criticized that the topic had "not been a top priority in the federal government for too long".

Wüst reiterated his proposal to conclude agreements with countries that could carry out legally secure procedures along the escape routes before people risked their lives on dangerous routes. "The deaths in the Mediterranean must be stopped."

The proposal for harmonizing asylum seeker benefits across federal states in Germany, as suggested by Hendrik Wüst, could potentially impact the migration pattern. The federal government's offer regarding financing has been deemed unacceptable by Wüst, and he emphasizes the necessity to move past negotiations.

In light of the need for a breakthrough in curbing irregular immigration, Wüst also advocates for more repatriation agreements with countries of origin, acknowledging this as a national task that the federal government should prioritize more actively.
