Cooking instead of governing - at Christmas, the Prime Minister also focuses on his own family. He even takes to the stove for his wife Katharina and daughter "Pippa".

Government - Wüst swings the wooden spoon for the family at Christmas

To round off a busy year, North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) would like to spend Christmas in the company of his loved ones in Münsterland. "All Christmas days are firmly planned with cooking for the family," the father of little Philippa (2 years old) told the German Press Agency in Düsseldorf.

"On Christmas Eve, we'll have raclette at the in-laws' house," said the 48-year-old. "I'll be cooking on Christmas Day, but I don't know what yet. But there's a certain trend in our house that it will be beef soup with boiled beef," said the passionate hunter. "If I can't think of anything better, the likelihood of that happening increases from day to day."

The top politician, who still lives with his wife Katharina and "Pippa" in his home town of Rhede, acknowledges his astonishment at the fact that he himself wields the cooking spoon with an amused grin: "I spent a large part of my childhood sitting on the seat of my pants in the kitchen. Our mother was a butcher and a master housekeeper. I never knew the stove in our parents' house without a pot bubbling away with a soup chicken or a piece of beef in it." Little Hendrik had obviously learned a lot back then: "I can cook - yes."
