Wüst gets new company car: combustion engine again

Many ministers in Hendrik Wüst's cabinet now drive electric cars. The Minister President himself does not: his official car is a petrol engine - and the new car that is due to arrive soon will not be electric either.

Wüst gets new company car: combustion engine again

NRW Minister President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) is to get a new company car in February. According to the State Chancellery, the leasing period will then expire. Wüst will then be driving an identical Audi A8 L - a petrol car. According to the state government, there is no electric version of the car, which weighs several tons.

In the annual "company car check" carried out by Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH), NRW was ranked last of all federal states this year - according to DUH, measured by the total CO2 emissions of the government fleet. In fact, according to the State Chancellery, the cabinet changed the company car directive last January "to enable and at the same time promote the use of more environmentally friendly alternative drive systems".

For example, all-electric cars (BMW i7) have now been ordered for several ministers, and some hybrid cars are already in use. In total, more cabinet members will soon be driving purely electric or hybrid cars than combustion engines. This is according to a list from the state government on existing and ordered company cars.

Economics Minister Mona Neubaur (Greens) was the first to be given a purely electric car as an official car. She told dpa: "I am delighted that I can now use it on the road. It is possible to combine automobility and climate protection goals. And, incidentally, I can experience the progress of the expansion of the charging infrastructure 'live'."

Despite the NRW government's recent change in company car directive to promote eco-friendly alternatives, Minister President Hendrik Wüst will continue to drive a combustion engine Audi A8 L when his current lease expires in February. Despite several ministers now using all-electric or hybrid cars, the government's fleet, which earns poor environmental rankings, still predominantly relies on combustion engine vehicles.
