"Individual makes alterations to original title or summary in news piece." - Writer and filmmaker Thomas Heise has passed away.
Thomas Heise, known as both a writer and a director, has sadly passed away. The sad news came from the Academy of Arts on Thursday, mentioning his family as the source. Heise, who was born in East Berlin, first got his start working under the direction of Heiner Carow in the 1970s. After finishing high school, he enrolled at the Film Academy in Babelsberg, but was expelled in 1983 for political reasons.
Heise spent time as a freelance writer and director, and studied further at the Berlin Academy of Arts from 1987 to 1990. From 1990 to 1997, he worked alongside Fritz Marquardt at the renowned Berlin Ensemble, where Heiner Müller had also handled directorship duties. At this very Ensemble, Heise had the opportunity to direct himself. Here, he presented works like Bertolt Brecht's "The Bread Shop," as well as Müller's "The Building" following his death.
During the GDR era and after unification, Heise created and starred in several documentary projects. He played a part in the 2009 documentary, "24 Hours Berlin - A Day in the Life."
Heise's talents were then recognized by the Berlin Academy of Arts, who brought him on board in 2001. Today, he is the head of the Film and Media Art sector within this esteemed institution. His past academic roles included working as a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.
