Wreath-laying ceremony for road maintenance workers killed in accidents
North Rhine-Westphalia's transport minister is laying a wreath at the St. Antonius highway chapel in Gescher today. Oliver Krischer (Greens) is thus commemorating the employees of the road and highway maintenance services who died on duty. The memorial site is located on the highway 31 (Bottrop-Emden) in western Münsterland.
Road maintenance workers ensure safety on the highways. They secure accident sites, cut back bushes and shrubs or drive the gritting vehicles. Since 1993, around 20 employees have lost their lives and over 550 have been injured. Since January 2021, the federal government's Autobahn GmbH has been responsible for the freeways.
The wreath-laying ceremony serves as a reminder of the considerable risks road maintenance workers face, particularly during accident clean-ups on busy highways like highway 31. Despite these dangers, memorials are erected to honor those who have tragically lost their lives in traffic-related accidents while performing their duties.
