Bundesliga 2 - "Would have deserved to win": Hansa squander 2:0 lead

FC Hansa Rostock squandered an important away win in the relegation battle in the 2nd Bundesliga. Despite taking a 2:0 lead, it was only enough for a 2:2 (2:1) draw at Karlsruher SC on Sunday.

The two goals conceded by Igor Matanovic (44') and Budu Siwsiwadse (81') were both preceded by serious defensive errors by Rostock. Junior Brumado (16) and former KSC professional Damian Roßbach (34) had scored for FC Hansa in front of 23,159 spectators. Following this point loss, Rostock's lead over the relegation places is now just one point.

Nevertheless, Hansa coach Alois Schwartz was not too disappointed. "We played a very good first half. I think we would have deserved to win overall. But we'll take this point with us," he said. The 56-year-old coached KSC from 2017 to February 2020 and led them to promotion to the second division in 2019. His assistant coach at the time was current KSC coach Christian Eichner.

Karlsruhe initially looked unsure of themselves on Sunday and hardly created any scoring chances. Rostock, on the other hand, were effective: Brumado took the lead from the very first opportunity after an assist from strong playmaker Svante Ingelsson. It was then Roßbach who, left alone by the sleepy Karlsruhe defense, increased the lead to 0:2.

After Matanovic had reduced the deficit shortly before the break after Simon Rhein had lost possession, Karlsruhe got into the game better in the second half. Marvin Wanitzek (46) and Matanovic (61) missed two great chances to make it 2:2.

However, after a brief period of pressure, Rostock took control again and were unlucky when referee Manuel Gräfe disallowed a second goal from Brumado after video evidence (63'). The Swede from Ingelsson was alleged to have committed a foul during his preparatory work. Shortly before the end, Siwsiwadse dusted off the ball to make it 2:2. The Rostock defense had again failed to clear the ball from the penalty area.
