World War II bomb defused not far from Frankfurt Airport
Specialists defused a bomb from the Second World War near Frankfurt Airport late on Monday evening. As a result, the Autobahn 5 between the Frankfurter Kreuz junction and the Zeppelinheim junction was completely closed in both directions for around half an hour, according to the police. Detour were signposted.
They had wanted to wait until late in the evening to defuse the 75-kilo bomb in order to restrict air traffic as little as possible. Night flights are banned at Frankfurt Airport from 23:00. The unexploded bomb was reportedly found by the explosive ordnance disposal service on Monday. "There was absolutely no danger from the bomb," said an official.
The closure of the Autobahn due to the bomb defusal led to increased traffic consequences, causing delays for commuters in the area. The incident also necessitated temporary rerouting of air traffic around Frankfurt Airport to ensure safety during the bomb defusal process.
