- World War I bomb defused in Magdeburg
In the heart of Magdeburg, a World War II bomb was successfully defused. Around 4:15 AM on Wednesday morning, the police announced that the operation had been completed.
The evacuated area was immediately reopened after the police operation ended. Residents were allowed to return to their homes and apartments, the city announced. Originally, the defusing of the 250-kilogram American-made bomb was scheduled for Tuesday evening, but it was delayed.
An estimated 3,000 to 3,500 residents were affected, with 37 vulnerable individuals from care facilities included in that number, according to the city's latest reports. More than 100 people were temporarily housed in an emergency shelter, the police explained.
The bomb was discovered during excavation work in the Straße Zum Domfelsen near the Elbe River. According to the police, an area within a 500-meter radius of the discovery site was evacuated, including the central Hasselbachplatz.
The successful defusing of the World War II bomb in Magdeburg had significant relief for the affected residents. With the operation completed, they could finally return home, as the city announced.
