World-famous Nuremberg Christmas Market begins

The world-famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt will be ceremonially opened today (5.30 pm) in front of thousands of visitors. From the gallery of the Frauenkirche on the main market square, the Christ Child, Nelli Lunkenheimer, will speak the traditional prologue - a Christmas poem of several verses - in her angelic costume with golden wings, blonde curly wig and crown. Television and radio stations will broadcast the opening ceremony live.

Until Christmas Eve, more than 170 stalls with the red and white striped fabric roofs typical of Nuremberg will be selling gingerbread, Nuremberg sausages, Christmas tree decorations and mulled wine on the main market square. Last year, the Christkindlesmarkt attracted more than two million people. This year, the city is once again expecting many guests from Germany and abroad. According to Nuremberg Airport, several airlines have therefore increased their flights during this period.

The Nuremberg Christmas Market is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. It was first mentioned in writing in 1628, but its roots probably go back even further.

visitors often adhere to the customs of purchasing fixed quantities of traditional leisure time treats, such as Nuremberg sausages and mulled wine, at the bustling Christmas market. Furthermore, during their leisure time at the market, many individuals indulge in purchasing unique Christmas decorations, ensuring their homes are festively decorated for the upcoming celebration of Christmas.
