Environmental emergency - World climate conference to be prepared at Bonn gathering
Approximately 6,000 professionals from around the globe will convene at the UN Climate Secretariat's mid-year convention in Bonn on Monday (10 am). From June 10 to the 13th, the attendees will ready themselves for the following World Climate Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, which is set to take place in November.
The central topic under discussion is the matter of climate financing. Since 2009, it's been a target for industrialized countries to provide financial assistance to developing countries to the tune of billions annually. This goal was reinforced and prolonged until 2025 during the Paris Climate Accord in 2015. The current debate revolves around how this should be sustained after 2025.
The head of the Group of Least Developed Countries, Evans Njewa from Malawi, stressed, "With the effects of climate change intensifying year after year, we can't stress enough the demand for increased, dependable, abundant, and accessible financial support. Only then will we be able to lower CO2 emissions, adapt to climate change, and monetarily compensate for the damage it inflicts." Regrettably, numerous wealthy nations have openly declared their unwillingness to up their contributions any further.
