New port for skippers - Work on the island harbor off Prerow in the final phase
Approximately two years from now, the works for the new harbor in Prerow are expected to be nearly completed this month. The opening and the commencement of regular operations are planned during this summer season. A specific date is not yet fixed due to pending technical and administrative approvals and the organizational tasks associated with operating a new harbor, the Environment Ministry announced.
The Prerow Harbor will replace the reclaimed harbor at Darßer Ort in the core zone of the Vorpommern Boddenlandschaft National Park and will serve as a waystation for sports boats. The connection to the land is a 720-meter-long seawall. The State Agency for Agriculture and Environment in Rostock is the builder of the new harbor. The costs, estimated at 42 million Euros, are borne by the state, with the funds coming from the European Regional Development Fund.
Given its location as the only harbor along the long coastline from Warnemünde in an easterly direction to Stralsund or Hiddensee, and in light of its proximity to the heavily trafficked shipping route Kadetrinne, the site holds a special significance, according to the Environment Ministry. Until the Seenotrettungskreuzer (SNS) of the German Society for Sea Rescue (DGzRS) can use its berth in the new harbor, the SNS is currently stationed in Barhöft.
- The new harbor in Prerow, located in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is anticipated to significantly contribute to leisure time activities along the Baltic Sea.
- During the final phase of construction, the Environment Ministry is closely monitoring the environmental impact of the harbor project in Prerow.
- Upon completion, the Prerow Harbor will provide better accessibility for shipping and boost the local economy, as stated by the BMU (Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety).
- Prerow, known for its beautiful beaches, will now boast an additional attraction for tourists, as the new harbor will not only serve shipping needs but also provide a base for sports boats.
