Work on sunken freighter "Verity" interrupted
Work on the sunken freighter "Verity" southwest of Helgoland has been interrupted due to the forecast of bad weather. No further work will take place on Monday for safety reasons, a spokeswoman for the Directorate-General for Waterways and Shipping told the news agency dpa. The diving vessel and the multi-purpose ship Mellum would seek shelter in order to return to the wreck when the weather improved.
On October 24, the "Verity" and the freighter "Polesie" collided in the North Sea. The "Verity" sank. The authorities believe that five sailors lost their lives in the accident. Four of them are still missing. Even during a diving operation at the weekend, there was still no trace of them.
Divers examined the sunken freighter at the weekend and partially dismantled it. According to the shipping authority, the experts used a crane to separate the main mast from the wreck. They then cut off the forward mast.
The bad weather forecast led to a pause in the shipping operation to retrieve the sunken freighter "Verity", potentially delaying efforts to locate the missing sailors involved in the previous shipping accidents. Despite the attempts to locate the missing crew members during the weekend diving operation, no new leads were found.
