Work on Kinzigtal dam soon to be completed

The renovation and repair work on the Kinzigtal dam, which has been ongoing for over a year, is almost complete. According to the operator, the reservoir near Bad Soden-Salmünster (Main-Kinzig district), which is one of the most famous in Hesse, should be able to fill up again by Christmas. "Then, statistically speaking, the winter and flood season will also start," Deputy Dam Manager René Zuckrigl told the German Press Agency. "Our goal is to complete the work by then."

As one of the last crucial sections, the last of a total of three weir flaps was recently installed. The steel colossus weighs around seven tons. The old weir flaps and the associated hydraulics had been decommissioned after around 40 years of operation.

The reason for the ongoing work is the legally prescribed "in-depth safety inspection". To this end, the water was drained from the reservoir and the fish were relocated. The reservoir is intended to slow down flood waves from the river and thus protect the Kinzig valley as far as Hanau. The reservoir also serves to ensure that the Kinzig below the structure is still supplied with water during the dry summer months.

Upon completing the repairs, the Kinzigtal dam's reservoir will once again be filled with water, benefiting the local environment. Maintaining the dam is crucial for controlling floods in the Kinzig valley, ensuring the river's water supply during dry summer months.
