Renewable energies - Work begins on solar thermal system in Stralsund

Work on the third largest solar thermal power plant in Germany, according to the city's own statements, in Stralsund has begun. The plant is expected to be about the size of five football fields, a spokesperson for the city utilities announced. The 24,000 square meter large solar thermal power plant is supposed to produce approximately 11 Gigawatt-hours of renewable, CO2-free heat per year and cover more than 10 percent of the heating network's demand in that area.

Installation of the first solar collectors is planned for the middle of the year. The commissioning is scheduled for mid-2025. The solar thermal power plant, including a block heating power plant and storage, is supposed to be realized by the city utilities Stralsund with an investment volume of 21 million Euros. Stralsund's mayor Alexander Badrow (CDU) was pleased at the groundbreaking ceremony on a Wednesday: "With this new plant, the summer base load for the hot water supply in the district heating network can be completely covered in the future."

Increasing share of renewable energies

The construction of the plant is part of the efforts of the city utilities to increase the share of renewable energies and use sustainable heating sources. Already implemented projects, such as the modernized block heating power plant, have contributed to increasing the share of renewable energies to 30 percent. After the implementation of the plant, the share is supposed to rise to 36 percent.

The largest solar thermal power plant, according to the city's statements, is supposed to be built in Leipzig (65,000 square meters), the second largest in baden-württemberg Bad Rappenau (29,000 square meters).

  1. The new solar thermal power plant in Stralsund, being constructed by the city utilities, is expected to contribute significantly to the city's renewable energy portfolio, aiming to increase the share of alternative energies to 36%.
  2. Besides the ongoing project in Stralsund, public utilities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have already implemented initiatives like the modernization of the block heating power plant, boosting the use of renewable energies to 30%.
  3. The city of Stralsund, known for its commitment to sustainable energy solutions, is set to house one of the biggest solar thermal power plants in Germany, which, along with its block heating power plant and storage system, will primarily rely on renewable energies for energy production.
