Soccer - Women's World Cup 2027: DFB relies on economic guarantees

The German Football Association is focusing primarily on financial incentives in its bid for the 2027 Women's World Cup. "Our great hope is that we can guarantee a lot economically. We will make it clear to FIFA that the World Cup will be a monetary success in our countries," said DFB project manager Patrick Kisko ahead of the official submission of the bid to the world governing body in Zurich this Friday. Germany is bidding for the tournament with the cities of Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund, Düsseldorf and Cologne together with the Netherlands and Belgium.

The DFB, which already hosted the Women's World Cup in 2011, sees its concept of short distances and sustainability in a World Cup in a "compact region" as a further trump card. FIFA also wants to use the revenue to promote the global development of women's soccer. Germany's competitors for 2027 are Brazil and USA/Mexico.

The last World Cup was held in Australia and New Zealand in the summer. Record revenues of 570 million US dollars (around 527 million euros) were generated there. "We will increase that considerably. I don't know if Brazil and USA/Mexico can achieve this," said Kisko.

The decision on the award is to be made on May 17, 2024 at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok. "We have the ambition to organize a first-class World Cup. We have very good and fair chances," said the DFB project manager. The USA, which together with Mexico and Canada will host the next men's World Cup in 2026, already hosted the women's World Cup in 1999 and 2003. There has never been a women's World Cup tournament in South America. South Africa recently withdrew as a candidate for 2027.
