Government officials convene at Parliament for legislative proceedings. - Women's shelters will be established across Thuringia.
In the near future, there will be expansive women's shelters and safe havens for abuse victims in the region of Thuringia. This regulation was endorsed by the representatives of the Left, SPD, Greens, and CDU in the Thuringian Parliament on a Thursday, while the AfD and FDP refrained from voting.
The duty then switches from the municipalities to the state, who will be obligated to fund these establishments entirely. The administration of these facilities will be under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Family.
The social politician from the Left, Karola Stange, claimed that a significant moment is being documented in Germany's history. She noted the inadequate number of women's shelters and safe homes for abuse victims in Thuringia.
Municipalities under fire
Stange criticized the municipalities in some cases, accusing them of making "lame excuses for themselves." In certain situations, facilities were shut down and cooperative agreements were established across county borders instead. Women in distress often had to travel vast distances to locate a sanctuary for themselves and their children. Additionally, they had to worry about discovering available accommodations.
The CDU social politician, Beate Meissner, positive towards the initiative but also noted its delayed implementation. "Unfortunately, we don't have a comprehensive system that allows women to find security in such situations," she said. This would change now.
Barrier-free safe havens
The SPD representative, Cornelia Klisch, mentioned that daily in Germany, a man tries to murder a woman. "We seek secure spaces for everyone in Thuringia, not merely in specific locations, but ideally, near their homes."
The law also tackles the topic of access. Stange emphasized that every protective housing and facility should be barrier-free in the future. "In the future, only accessible facilities will be erected."
