Women's Promotion Act to be revised
Saxony-Anhalt's Social Affairs Minister Petra Grimm-Benne (SPD) is pushing for a new legal basis in the area of gender equality. "Essential regulations of the Women's Promotion Act are almost 20 years old," the SPD politician told the German Press Agency. "That's why the coalition has set itself the goal of developing the Women's Promotion Act into a modern equality law for this legislative period."
At its core, the reform is about strengthening those responsible in the municipalities. "The full-time equal opportunities officers are to be strengthened by, among other things, a right to sue in the performance of their duties if equal opportunities issues are ignored," said Grimm-Benne. It remains to be seen when this could be implemented.
The black-red-yellow alliance had agreed on changes in the coalition agreement. "Although the living situation of women has improved considerably in many areas, women are still affected by discrimination on the basis of gender despite all the progress made," it says. An equality law is intended to counteract the structural discrimination of women and improve their career opportunities.
Sarah Schulze took over the position of Equal Opportunities Officer in the state in November 2022 after a two-year vacancy. At the time, she explained that one goal in her new role was to develop a modern gender equality law.
In her new role as Equal Opportunities Officer, Sarah Schulze aims to develop a modern gender equality law, focusing on improving women's career opportunities. Despite significant improvements in women's living situations in many areas, they still face gender discrimination, which the new equality law aims to counteract.
