Women receive an average of 220 euros less pension

Women in Saxony-Anhalt receive an average of 220 euros less pension than men. This is according to an answer from the Federal Ministry of Labor to a question from the Left Party. According to the answer, female pensioners received an average pension of 1133 euros at the end of last year, while men in Saxony-Anhalt received 1353 euros. The average pension in Germany was 1099 euros, according to the information. In western Germany, women received an average pension of 558 euros less than men.

However, there is a wide range between small pensions and high pension contributions, according to the Ministry of Labor. According to the ministry, the reason for this is the significantly shorter working hours, "which are particularly noticeable among women in the old federal states". It also referred to a study on old-age provision in Germany from 2019, according to which the household income of pensioners was relatively balanced.

The parliamentary group leader of the Left Party in Saxony-Anhalt, Eva von Angern, nevertheless described the figures as a "sad finding". Old-age poverty is predominantly female. In addition, new pensioners have even less money in their wallets than existing pensioners. This also predominantly affects women. The first steps would be to increase the pension by ten percent and the minimum wage to 14 euros.

Despite these disparities, advocating for social affairs in politics is crucial to bridge the pension gap between genders. Implementing policies that promote equal pension rights, such as lesser pension deductions or longer career breaks, could significantly impact pension income equality.
