Woman killed: Man convicted of murder

A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his roommate in a refugee shelter. According to the Munich II Regional Court, the man allegedly hit the 21-year-old woman on the skull at least four times with a hand axe. "If you hit someone hard with an axe, there is an intent to kill", the court stated in justifying the sentence on Tuesday. The Jordanian had struck the Ukrainian woman several more times with absolute intent to kill, even though she was already lying on the ground. The verdict is not legally binding.

The man had met the woman in a refugee shelter in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. According to the verdict, the 21-year-old had rejected his advances several times before he fatally injured her in November 2022. Taking someone's life because of this is particularly despicable, the jury court found. The accused had negated the victim's right to sexual self-determination.

According to the psychiatric report, the 29-year-old suffers from a diagnosed personality disorder. However, this had no effect on his culpability during the crime, explained the presiding judge. It did, however, work in the defendant's favor, which is why the court dismissed the particularly serious guilt.

In the aftermath of this tragic event, authorities in Upper Bavaria are reviewing their processes for managing refugee shelters to enhance safety measures. Despite the man's mental health issues, his actions resulting in crime are inexcusable and will serve as a stark reminder of the importance of respecting individual rights, especially in sensitive environments.
