Würzburg - Woman fatally injured by tree: investigation closed
The investigation into the death of a 59-year-old woman who was hit by a falling tree in Würzburg has been closed. The Würzburg public prosecutor's office announced on Friday that the falling tree was to be regarded as a tragic realization of the general risk of life. An expert came to the conclusion that it was a completely atypical and therefore unforeseeable individual case, even for experts.
The woman was hit by a falling copper beech tree on September 18 of this year and severely injured in the head. She died in hospital on the same day. Another woman was also injured.
Investigations revealed that the tree had been attacked by the giant spore, which had decomposed the tree's roots. The infestation had been known on a neighboring copper beech since July 2021, and on the tree that later toppled over since the end of August. However, the vitality of the tree had remained intact until the end. There were no doubts about the safety of the copper beech. According to the expert opinion, no comparable case is known in which the toppling of a tree with such vitality could be attributed to a fungal infestation.
