Woman charged with membership of terrorist organization
An indictment has been filed against a 33-year-old German woman with the State Protection Senate of the Higher Regional Court (OLG) in Frankfurt on suspicion of membership of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS). According to the results of the investigation, the woman from Frankfurt traveled to Syria via Turkey in 2015 and married an IS fighter there according to Islamic rites, the public prosecutor's office in Frankfurt announced on Wednesday. She is said to have raised her children, born in 2016 and 2018, according to the beliefs of the association.
In 2019, she was arrested by Kurds and taken to a camp. There, she is said to have tried to convert other inmates to a radical interpretation of Islam. She was returned to Germany with her children in March 2022.
The prosecution accuses her of membership of a terrorist organization abroad; according to the press release, the State Protection Senate of the Higher Regional Court must now decide whether to open the proceedings.
The woman's radical activities in the camp raised concerns about the potential spread of extremist ideologies, especially related to terrorism. Her alleged membership of the terrorist organization IS and her attempts to propagate her beliefs to others highlight the complexity and ongoing threats posed by terrorism and extremism.
