Berlin - Woman brutally attacked: Convicted murderer in court

A murderer who has since been convicted in Duisburg is back on trial for allegedly brutally assaulting a woman in Berlin-Mitte around six years ago. The 35-year-old is said to have attacked a then 64-year-old woman with a telescopic baton in front of her apartment door in the capital and seriously injured her. During the attack in November 2017, he stole her car keys and tried to start the vehicle parked nearby. The defendant announced at the start of the trial on Wednesday at the Berlin Regional Court that he would make a statement.

The German national shot and killed a 46-year-old café owner in Duisburg in May 2017. He was arrested in Berlin at the beginning of 2018. In March 2019, the Duisburg Regional Court found him guilty of murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The judges assumed the murder criterion of malice aforethought. The verdict also stated that the accused had acted out of murderous intent. There had been no relationship between the perpetrator and the victim - the man had acted on long-held fantasies of killing. The verdict is final.

The woman who was attacked in Berlin suffered massive skull injuries and fractures to her arms and hands, according to the indictment. A court spokeswoman said that in the trial for particularly serious robbery and dangerous bodily harm, it was also being examined whether, in the event of a guilty verdict, the man would also have to be placed in preventive detention after serving his sentence. The trial will continue on January 9.
