Wolfsburg coach believes in women's Olympic chances
The coach of German cup winners VfL Wolfsburg still believes in the German women's soccer team's chances of reaching the Olympics. Unlike a few months ago, he sees "a certain conviction, a certain quality, a certain development" to win a game like the important Nations League match against Denmark on Friday, said Tommy Stroot after his VfL's cup win against Werder Bremen. He was "convinced that the German national team will play a good game against the Danes and that they really have the opportunity to win with a two-goal difference and thus also advance to the next round."
To still have a realistic chance of winning the group and thus an Olympic ticket, the German team (9 points) must win their home game against leaders Denmark (12) in Rostock (20:30/ZDF) by at least two goals difference. Stroot, whose team has the most international players with seven nominations for the upcoming Nations League games against Denmark and four days later against Wales, also emphasized that he considers qualification to be a difficult task.
Only as group winners would the German women play in the Nations League final tournament at the end of February for one of the two European Olympic places for Paris 2024. France are seeded as hosts. The DFB had nominated a 24-strong squad for the two important upcoming matches. In addition to captain Alexandra Popp and goalkeeper Merle Frohms, who are both returning from injury, the Wolfsburg squad also includes Kathrin Hendrich, Marina Hegering, Jule Brand, Svenja Huth and Lena Lattwein.
