Wissing: Frankfurt-Mannheim railroad line to be renovated
According to Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing, the planned renovation of important railroad lines in Germany should not be delayed by the current budget problems of the federal government. The Riedbahn, i.e. the Frankfurt-Mannheim line, will be renovated next year as planned.
"For us in the infrastructure sector, it is clear that we have to bring forward the most urgent things if necessary, and for us this clearly includes the renovation of Deutsche Bahn's core network," said Wissing at an event at the Siemens railroad technology plant in Braunschweig on Thursday.
"This is where we have some of the biggest infrastructure problems in Germany, and they must be tackled as a matter of priority. That is why we are implementing this concept of high-performance corridor renovation and will renovate the Riedbahn as planned in 2024," explained the FDP politician. According to current plans, construction work is due to begin in July and be completed in December 2024.
The federal government had announced investments of almost 40 billion for the railroad over the coming years. A considerable proportion of these funds were to come from the federal government's Climate and Transformation Fund. However, following a ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court, this pot is now significantly smaller. Other sources of funding are being sought. The general refurbishment of busy rail routes is intended to reduce the high level of unpunctuality in long-distance traffic in the medium term.
Despite the financial challenges facing the federal government, it's crucial to prioritize the renovation of key railroad lines, such as the Frankfurt-Mannheim railroad, known as the Riedbahn. This high-traffic route requires immediate attention to improve railroad traffic, thereby impacting the overall finances of household budgets reliant on effective rail service.
