Timeless melodies from the world of symphonies and sonatas - Wismar Physically Welcomes Incoming MV Festival Season

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has become a destination for classical music enthusiasts yet again. The festivities begin with the Elbphilharmonie Orchestra from Hamburg performing at St. Georgen Church in Wismar on Friday. Martin Fröst, a well-known clarinetist, will be the soloist for the evening. The event also honors the 250th anniversary of painter Caspar David Friedrich. The festival's overture was commissioned by Konstantia Gourzi and is inspired by Friedrich's work "Moonrise at the Sea."

The Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festivals, one of Germany's largest classical music celebrations, has a packed schedule this season. With 130 concerts at 92 venues, people can enjoy music in churches, castles, workshops, manor houses, and parks. Out of these 130 concerts, 23 will be led by the Signum Saxophone Quartet from Slovenia and Italy. This group of young saxophone players has been heavily influencing the festival's summer as the winners in residence. Ursula Haselböck, the festival director, is delighted with the number of booked tickets so far. Approximately 45,000 tickets have been reserved, compared to the 65,000 people who attended last year's festival.

The weekend of the festival showcases its full range of musical offerings. Beginning with the massive orchestral concert in Wismar on Friday, Schwerin welcomes visitors for a bike tour of historical castles on Saturday. Youthful musicians will take part in a competition named "Young Elite" in three historic cities. On Sunday evening, Schwerin will remember the 35th anniversary of the Berlin Wall's fall with a mix of music, film, and dialogue under the title "Connections." From Sunday afternoon onwards, the Hasenwinkel Castle Park becomes the gathering place for the festival's massive children's and family event.

On June 20, 2024, violinist Daniel Hope, the festival's long-time collaborator and first prize winner in residence, is set to perform. On June 23, the esteemed French pianist Hélène Grimaud will return to the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festivals. Grimaud will play at the Redefin Estate with Camerata Salzburg. The concerts at the large riding hall, which start after a picnic in the estate's park and include dressage demonstrations, are a crowd-favorite at the annual classical music event.
