Soccer - Wirtz's father: change probably not an option until 2025
International soccer player Florian Wirtz, who is the focus of attention of major clubs, will probably stay at Bayer Leverkusen for the time being and not make a premature move. "At the moment, everything is geared towards Florian continuing to play in Leverkusen next season," said his father Hans-Joachim Wirtz, who is representing his son and conducting the contract talks, on Sky. According to him, a transfer is only conceivable from 2025.
FC Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Manchester United and other top European clubs are said to be interested in the 20-year-old exceptional talent. His contract with the Bundesliga leaders runs until the summer of 2027. Wirtz moved to the works club from the youth ranks of FC Köln in January 2020. So far this season, Wirtz has scored 16 goals in 19 competitive matches - six goals and ten assists. It is not just Bayer coach Xabi Alonso who sees him as a pivotal player; national coach Julian Nagelsmann also has high hopes for the attacking player ahead of next year's World Cup at home.
Wirtz himself said in November that he would stay regardless of coach Xabi Alonso. "I would like him to stay in Leverkusen for a long time. But in the end, everyone has to go their own way and at some point I have to decide where I would prefer to play. The fact is: I'm very happy at the club right now," he told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland. According to media reports, Alonso is being targeted by Real Madrid.
